AM-73 vs AS-83: any discernable tonal differences?

I sold my AS-73 and AS-83 years ago as I felt they were too big for my small body frame. But now that I've got an AM-73 (with SD APH-1's), I can't help wondering if I'm missing out on woodier tones.

I may have an opportunity soon to get back my AS-83 (with Seth Lovers), and wonder if I should.

What do you guys think?

Jaime,

I think the pickups will be the key to your question, not guitars. Stock, the ACH pickups are a limiting factor in Artcore tone. The 83 and 73 are very similar and the bodies are both laminated maple. The ACH pickups sound pretty much the same in both guitars and I can't imagine other pickups being much different.

If you liked the tone of the Seth Lovers, and they gave you the "woody" tone you want back, then I would say save the money for the AS83 and put the Lovers in your current axe. Or, get the 83 and sell the 73 . . . better guitar, the pickups you like, and more cash for you.

MIke, thanks for your reply... so body size doesn't make much tonal difference in the case of these two specific guitars?

It does make a difference. It's not a huge difference, but you will notice it when directly comparing them.
