its a beauty but it looks abit like the lower horn might get in the way of some more extreme playing

This guitar is not serialized, which I understand is somewhat common
for this model. I would guess it was made between 88 and 90, there is a
"faded" square on the back of the headstock, but no #, and also the
neckplate is blank. Sometimes the prototypes are not serialized, so it
could be that.

anyway, I love the guitar, it is my favorite out of my 15.

The lower horn doesn't feel any different than a regular Rg when playing.

cheers!
Can i just ask, was this actually an Alex Skolnick model? I read somewhere that it wasn't actually his signature, he just popularised it.

Adam, technically you are right, it is only known as the "skolnick"
model because most people don't know what a 540P or 540PII is, but he
never endorsed the guitar, but did play a couple in various videos
before continuing on with the 540S and also an RG in other videos.

Rumor has it that it was shown to various artists during 88 NAMM and
because he was one of the first to play it publically, it became known
as his model.

here is a quick note from alex:

"Hello- The 540P is a great guitar, but I can't claim it as the "Alex
Skolnick" model. I did a couple ads with it, so people associate it with
me, but it's just called a 540P as far as I remember. Good luck!
Alex Skolnick".
