So I just bought this SR3005, and can't find any info on how to decipher the serial. The only serial I can find is in the headstock inlay.

It reads 52684 under the SDGR logo.

I really wish I knew that there was such a big difference between this and my SR500, I would have skipped on the lesser basses and just ran straight for this.

I had to do some work to it when I got it... had to pull a few of the bridge pieces off to get the set screws back in the bottom of a couple of the saddles. I pretty well had to set it up after that, the saddles were just floating along because none of them were tightened down, I added a tad bit of relief to the neck, and readjusted the saddle heights to accomodate.

It wound up playing like a dream.

But anyway, sorry for the sidetrack. My real question is how to determine exact model # and possibly the date of manufacture.

Thanks in advance.

Oh, yeah, I was just looking at ibanezregister.com, and only saw a few entries for the 3005 and 3005E, none of which have a wenge fretboard listed. This one does. I just took notion to pull the neck and see if there were any markings, the body has HSR3005-01 stamped on it, and a red circled N seperate from that stamp. The neck has SR3005, and then only the made in Japan mark on the back of the headstock.

I was starting to worry that I paid a premium for a frankenbass or something.Doh

First, you have an awesome bass, congrats! It's on my wishlist since....well, forever :)
Second: http://ibanezregister.com/Gallery/basses/sr/gal-sr3005e.htm
Third: the serial number (or at least the one we're interested in) should be on the back of the headstock.

Thanks. I'm pretty proud of it as well. If you think it looks nice, you oughtta play it. Before I got this, my SR500 was my all-time favorite, but now I have the feeling that it's gonna start collecting dust.

But about the serial#, the only things on the headstock is the really small "Made in Japan" (on the back), and the pearloid SDGR inlay with the 52684 on the front.

Well my guess is it could be the 2004 model (since it's the only one with a wenge neck and from the pics it looks identical), but without the serial number we can't be 100% sure. Anyway, the Prestige line is Ibanez's elite, so of course those basses sound killer :) You don't pay more for nothing :)

Oh well, at least I tried. Thanks for the lead on the 2004 model... I looked through a few years and probably just missed it. But it seemed like most of the ones within the last several years had Bartolini pickups and EQ. Is that the difference between the Sr3005 and the Sr3005e (Ibanez electronics vs. the Bartolini package)?

I also thoroughly looked over the headstock to check for sanding marks or possible tiny bits of a serial number (to make sure it wasn't stolen at some point)... If this was a serial cleanup, it was a good one. It wasn't sanded off. There would either be sanding marks, there would be a slight indention from where it was sanded off, or the oil finish would be messed up (if a solvent was used to remove it). The only place I haven't checked for markings is under the pickups.

edit: After reading through several online reviews, I'm starting to think the descriptions at the ibanez register are not 100% correct. Most (if not all) reviewers mentioned the wenge fretboard. I haven't found one mention of rosewood on these basses, except for a random forum post about how there were several munufacturers moving away from wenge due to scarcity. Also, due to the pickups and the possible correction on the wenge fretboard, I'm starting to lean towards a 2001 model be the most probable. I might be reading too much into the stamp inside the neck joint (it said HSR3005-01), so I kinda just pulled that one outta my butt. Eww. I feel dirty now.

Thanks again for all the help.

I know how frustrating is to not be able to date your bass - you have my sympathy Happy
Regarding the stamp inside the neck joint: I'm no expert (obviously) but I was under the impression those are added to so the luthier would know which neck goes with a certain body (there's one written on the body - pocket and another on the neck). I don't know if you can get extra info from such a stamp mark (like the production year, factory, etc). I could be wrong, though...

Custom wood knobs are ordered. Gotta send one of the original stacked knobs to ensure the wooden ones will fit. This will fix a few things that have stuck out in my brain with this bass. The first thing is how tall the EQ knobs are. Those things stick out there a good ways. I almost clotheslined one of my kids with one because he ran a little too close.

OK. That was stretched a bit. But they do hang out there a bit too far.

Then, the same knobs need to have recessed bottoms so they will cover up the nut on the pot. *there just wasn't a good way to say that.* So, the new ones will cover everything, hopefully be a little shorter, and they will be made of wenge.... so they will match the neck.

Pictures as soon as everything comes in (probably mid to end of next week)

To clear things up for people still coming across this thread.( I know this is an old thread but it has to be said.)
The 3000 series has no serial on the back of the headstock only in the front.
All the inlays, inc. headstock are abalone.
The fretboard is definately wenge!
The Ibanez register is not correct on information of a lot of models. (I know because I mailed complaints, but nothing is done about it even if it is '09 by now.)
The only serial # dating they explain is for guitars and models with serials starting with a letter.
I find the Ibanez register fairly messy in correctness and research, not a trustworthy database in my opinion.
Please take these points into account when visiting the register.
This post is merely for information, to provide a correct description of the 3000 series and on how to look at the register.

To darkmist11:

I am intrigued by your response. I am now struggling with a very similar issue. I am considering buying an Ibanez SoundGear Prestige SR 3005e 5-string bass, and the seller says it only has a five digit, all-numbers (no letters) serial number. I haven't seen the bass yet. It is said to be 2002, MIJ.

You have stated, as a fact, that this line of basses has no other type of serial number. How do you know this is a fact? No disprespect here; I am just trying to understand.

Can anything be read from, or determined by, this five-difit serial #?

Do you happen to know if all SoundGear Prestige models are built in a single country, in a single plant? Thanks for your input.

To Curtybob:
Any update on your 3005? Is it the 3005e? Has it worked out well for you? Thanks.
