I'm puzzeled by the red one... The recessed pickup rings are a mystery on a red S. I want it :D

Yeah, that one confuses me as well. I have already given as much information, as I can, regarding that guitar. It's in the Official S series thread. Weird!

Thanks again, all; Couple more things:
- would peeking at the plate number help narrow down the info a little more definitively?
- anyone know where i can take this thing (Phila, PA, USA area) for once (or twice) over? issues are: 1) neck is slightly twisted 2) needs fret job 3) gold hdw needs to be re-plated (?) 4) the finish is starting to crack around the edges, and there are some small "dents" in a couple of places. Jeez, i feel like a big a$$ for letting it go for so long.

Okay, some more interesting info and pictures...
First of all, plate on back said "Made in Japan". While this may be true for the actual plate itself, I was a bit skeptical...

Unbolted the neck (i'm prepping the guitar to take it somewhere...don't know where yet though). Here's where it gets good... ;)
Neck:

Not sure what "CS 'R' Body" indicates...

Neck cavity on body (which btw, is solid maple, not just maple top):

Appears as though this builder's was Mace Bailey (yes, Mace Bailey) and that this guitar was indeed built in October of 1987 for Lou Franco (played with 80's pop band Pretty Poison, and now part of the the Lou Franco Project).

MAN, I SURE wish they would consider some reincarnation of the Custom Shop again.
This guitar is so COOL. It is proof of how effective a Custom Shop can be.

Feeler...
looking to possibly sell this J870001 custom saber, and need some input on whether I'm crazy for doing so... :)
Some "extenuating circumstances" are putting me in a bit of a financial stress, so I may have to let this baby go - after owning this beauty for more than 25 years.
This guitar was ordered by Lou Franco (of Pretty Poison), and built by Mace Bailey at the Ibanez custom shop in Bensalem PA in October of 1987.
A few years back (well after I originally posted this thread), Lou got in touch with me to talk about the history of this guitar (and even play it again at one of his gigs!); I recently had it brought back to it's glory by locally-respected luthier Audric Jankauskas, who, as it happens, was a childhood friend of the original owner, Lou.
Needless to say, this guitar is very special in many ways, and it would be very difficult for me to let it go. However, life sucks, and sometimes these things need to be done. Opinions?

[Edit: the attached pictures - except for the action shot - were taken just prior to the overhaul by Audric]
