Hi Everyone:

Wanted to get back into guitar playing after many years away from it and I ended up buying a 2006 AS93 (I think it is 2006 since the serial number starts with S0611...)

I got it at guitar center for about $500 ($450 for the guitar and $50 tax) and it came with a hard case (ok quality case, not great), and they did some setup of the action / intonation for free.

I really wanted violin sunburst, so of course all they have is the Blue Sunburst...

Anyway, turns out the local independent guitar store has a new AS93 with "blemishes" that they are selling for about $565 after tax, but no case. Same Blue Sunburst color Doh

Since I have 45 days to return the 2006 AS93 I bought from guitar center, I am wondering if the new models would be worth the difference in price. Are the hardware and electronics on recent models much better than on models from 2006?

And can I expect a 10-year-old Chinese-made AS93 to last for a long time???

The one I got seems to be in pretty good condition and lightly used. No real dents or scratches on it. the only thing is that gold finish on the hardware seems to be wearing off / fading away in lots of places.

I really won't be gigging with the guitar, so I don't know how much I would need the case of the one I have. Really, I only plan on using it to play along with my 11-year old son whom I am trying to get to spend more attention on music and less attention on video games.

So... ten-year-old guitar plus case and free setup for $500??? Or new model of guitar with no case and probably extra $$$ for setup for about $565???

Ok, well... nevermind...

I found a newer (2016) as93 with upgraded tuning machines and a bridge and nut on Reverb for about $80 less than I paid for the 2006 as93 I got from guitar center, so I will be returning my as93 back to GC once the one I ordered off of reverb arrives and checks out ok. This one comes with a case as well, but it is still the blue sunburst color which I am still not in love with...

Wow,

That sounds like a good deal with upgraded hardware! Its a shame you can't find the finish you want, but I guess that's all you can find used right now!

As far as differences, the pickups in the newer AS93 are arguably a little better. However, many people do enjoy and prefer the sound of the older ACH pickups in the older AS93. The newer AS93 also has a pickguard.

Either way, for the Ibanez Artcore guitars made in China, many on this forum will attest to their quality! If taken care of properly, these guitars should last more than 10 years!

Hope this helps,
-Bill

Thank you so much for the response and the info, Bill. I really appreciate it.

One question for you:

Aside from the differences in pickups, do you think that an AS93 would have a "brighter" sound when compared to an AS73 due to the three-piece neck on the AS93 including maple??? (instead of just being a one-piece mahogany neck in the AS73)

Or is the maple in the three-piece neck most likely just going to affect the rigidity / stability of the neck?

I ask because I see an AS73 locally on craigslist for a really low price and it is in a beautiful red color... I should probably stop looking at craigslist... Shhh

Thanks in advance.

I don't know that it will necessarily have a brighter sound. I feel that the sound will probably be identical(tonally). The 3 piece neck is really going to attribute more structural integrity to hold up over time. That being said, many companies(including Ibanez) have used one piece necks in the past and many of these necks have held the test of time. While a 3 piece neck makes more sense structurally, it doesn't necessarily mean that a one piece neck will fail over time.

Hope this helps!

So the 2016 AS93 with upgrades to the tuning machines, bridge, tail piece and nut arrived today and I am a very happy camper with it. Spent most of the afternoon laying it instead doing the work I was supposed to be doing.

It is set up well and it both plays and sounds better than the 2006 AS93 I picked up last week.

so I will be retuning that 2006 model to GC tomorrow or Sunday.

Yes, the 2006 I bought was good.

Just the 2016 I bought was gooder... and about $100 less since I got the 2016 from Reverb while the 2006 I bought from Guitar Center.
