First off, let me clarify that saying it's a 540S is an educated guess, but based on the pictures I've seen online that look exactly like my guitar I'm pretty confident. Then again, when I see a page like http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/Portal:S_series with 20 different sub-types of 540S...who knows? Well, I'm hoping you guys will, actually. :)

Here's some pictures of my actual guitar: https://imgur.com/a/KqDA6

The captions for the pictures on Imgur are as follows (to save the clicking back and forth):

  • Body back: The plate on the back of the guitar says "Ibanez / New ideas for today's musicians / 892058 / 1726 Winchester Rd. Bensalem PA 19020 U.S.A." UPDATE: Looks like it's a 540S (Saber), and based on the specifics of its features it's either a 1988 or 1989 model. Any pointers on how to identify / differentiate between those two would be welcome! Ibanez has a habit of putting the year at the beginning of their serial numbers as a one- or two-digit number, but is it "number 90258 from 1988" or "number 2058 from 1989"?
  • Body front: The front has a five-position switch, volume and tone knobs, a DiMarzio "IBZ USA F2" humbucking pickup followed by two separate DiMarzio "IBZ USA C2" pickups. The tremolo system is an Original Edge. The finish is called "Black Cherry". There are 22 frets.
  • Headstock back: No markings on the back of the headstock.
  • Headstock front: No markings on the front of the headstock either, except for the Ibanez logo. The empty space there at the nut is normally covered by a piece of plastic that you take off to do truss rod adjustments. I have that piece of plastic and can confirm it's 100% blank on both sides.

Based on the info I found on http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/540S I've narrowed it down to 1988-1989 as follows:

  • The Black Cherry finish was only made until 1991
  • The five-way lever didn't come in until 1988
  • Mine doesn't have the "Custom Made" inlay on the 22nd fret, which they had from 1990-1992

At this point it's really just personal curiosity to narrow it down, rather than any practical reason. Although, if my base assumption is wrong and it's not actually a 540S (but rather some other sub-type, presumably) then I'd be interested in knowing.

Corollary question: Why doesn't the instrument just, you know, have the model number printed on it somewhere? I mean, put the identifying info on the underside of one of the covers on the back, if nothing else (if you think having it visible detracts from the aesthetics, etc.). Just sayin'. Anyway, thanks in advance for any help with my sleuthing!

Welcome to the forum,

You're right, usually the back of the head stock will have the model and serial number, but this one appears blank.

Ibanez Catalog 1988

The link above is from the 1988 Ibanez Catalog Archive and shows the closest example to your guitar. The obvious difference is the selector switch. I could not find an exact match looking through 1988 and 1989 catalogs. You can continue looking through the archive; here is the link:

This is indeed 540S, and from the information you provided 1988-1989 is the closest bet.

There should be serial number on the neck joint plate. Could you take better picture of it, or just write the serial here?

892058

I'll update the original post to include all the information I put in the Imgur picture captions, to save y'all the trip back and forth in case there's something else in there that can be helpful.

Ok, this is Bensalem custom shop plate, so it's guitar made in 1989 with number 2058.

An approximation of month of production would be hard because they used different ranges for different models.
