I just picked up a 1989 Artcore AM 300, plays "SWEET" nice light weight, like the Super 58 Neck found the Super 58 bridge a little bright/thin for my taste. I know the pots at the standard 500K (504042 & 07) cant tell what the tone cap is? I'll either change the cap first maybe warm it up a bit or change the bridge pickup maybe a Duncan 59 Looking for suggestions thanks

Hi
Did you ever warm up the tone. I have a arc500nt with the same pickups to me it also sound brittle and thin. I've tried heavy gauge strings even lowering the pickups but its till sounds to bright. I use a mulitFX pedal and playing through a acoustic simulator then this guitar shines, which seems to suggest these super 58 are more micro phonic in nature.

a member here suggested swapping out for sethlovers but I heard other complaints of feedback. so before i spend $$ I like to explore other options.

I had purchased A Fender Blacktop HH Strat for the neck and to my surprise the Hot Vintage alnico humbucking pickups in the guitar were some of the nicest pickups I have heard!!!! they also sounded good split. So I took out both Super 58's installed the Fender Humbuckers and replaced the the Volume & Tone pots with push pull to split the coils. Now I have one versatile guitar that sounds sweet!I play mostly Blues, Jazz, funk, soul & Rock Check out Utube for review/demo of that strat and see if you like what you hear for the music you play. They are not expensive at all. Best of Luck!

The ARC500NT does not have the same pickups as the AM300. The MIC Custom 58's are similar but for a time they had ceramic magnets. The ARC500NT was in production during the time that the Custom 58's were being made with ceramic magnets. Change the magnets to AlNiCi and you might like the pickups.

Hi Tracy Dae.
I prefer a warm/sweet sound when clean and a growl with distortion"if that makes any sense"
Looking at online sales there is a range 1 through 5
How do I choose?

It's a matter of personal tastes. I put AlNiCo V magnets in a set of Custom 58's I put in one of my AR200 guitars several years ago and liked the result very much. I still have those pickups in that guitar.

Hi Tracy Dae
I have managed to source some Alnico 2 and 5 magnets on Aliexpress
Here in South Africa I could not find and ordering from StewMac would just not be worth it due to exchange rate.
I hope the set from Aliexpress are good.

While on the subject I would like your opinion on the classic elite pickups. I have them in my AS73t I like the tone so one part of me is "dont mess with it, if its not broke" and the tweeker in me feels "maybe it could sound Better" and I should try experimenting by changing out the ceramic magnets.

What are your thoughts?

I have no meaningful amount of experience with them. Nothing more than trying out a guitar or two at Guitar Center that has them. If you have ever been in a Guitar Center store, you know you can't hear yourself think let alone judge how pickups in a guitar sound.
