First of all, I don't have any pics yet, but will prob post them here at some point.

The general questions on the "S" that i have are:
- In what year was the "S" first produced?
- Does anyone else have an "S" where the orientation of the jack is "in-line" with the knobs, and NOT oriented as to point "in-line" with the strings towards the strap knob (mine is in-line with the knobs, IOW like a strat)?

My old "S":
I purchased my "S" back in 1989 second-hand. The shop I'd bought it from claimed that it was custom made by Ibanez for Louie Franco of the band Pretty Poison. It has a beautiful sunburst flamed maple body, maple neck/rosewood fingerboard with "shark-tooth" inlays, gold(ish) hardware. The reason I'd asked about the year in which the "S" was first produced is because I'd spoken to some people a few years ago who'd said that the "S" started production in 1988. I'm not sure if my "S" may be the "first one" (places anti-flame suit on), since the serial number (if the serial number is any indicator of the year, who knows?) is "J870001". Would anyone be able to shed any light on this?

Shamefully though, this guitar is need of some work; I haven't been the best father to this instrument...

-- EDIT -- Some fuzzy pix of the guitar.
(knobs are a bit tarnished to say the least, and are gold (brass?) beehive; Edge trem also gold)

my guitar likes Thomas the Tank Engine, too, if you hadn't noticed... ;)

Posting some pics might help identify it.

From my understanding of the earlier serial numbers, your guitar would have been built in '88. Unfortunately, it's not an exact science as Ibanez is not always consistent with their serial number use. Many people have different ideas on how they work. From what I read in other posts, '87 to '96 serial numbers had 6 digits following the letter with the first digit being the year of manufacture. i.e J870001 would be made in 1988.

The rest is up for interpretation. It could be the 70001st guitar made that year, or the 1st guitar made in the seventh month. I'm sure there are more ways to interpret it.

Sorry I can't help you out more. I'd still like to see some pictures though.

Remember the S used to be called the SABER.
Check the catalogs @ www.ibanezrules.com

There is an official year when the SABER became the S.
Also you will find that the FGM (Frank Gambale)
models, back in the day, were just Frank's tweaking of the SABER/S
His sig models usually had matching color headstocks and even
matching color sharktooth inlays.

Yes, it's a "Sabre". I was under the impression that an "S" was the same thing. Doh

Thanks for the info fretrunr

..edit..
Again, looking at the catalogs, tho, i still can't find a pic of an "S" (or Sabre) that has the jack oriented the way mine is... hmmm.

..edit 2..
In looking at the catalog for 1988, it appears as though there was a Sabre model that had the jack oriented like a strat's: the 540SBC.

Does anyone out there own an SBC?

Also, the guitar has DiMarzio PAF (pro?) pickups in the neck and bridge positions, and a single coil in the mid...

Hi,

I also just got a 2nd ibanez (should be made in 1990) - (33143 yen + 11050yen Shipping) with hardcase -
I have check the catalog and find that the neck should be black - but mine has the same color as the body.
Any idea , why it not black

Will be replacing all the stock pickup to Seymour ducan
1. PATB-1 (bridge and neck)
2. PA-STK1n (MIddle)

Will it suit well to the mahogany body??

He means it's a older MIJ S body basically (block heel, beehive knobs, wizard I, etc...).

...BTW: This is some major thread highjacking, nice guitar though.

F.3: The serial number looks like a pre '87, but thats odd since they started production of the saber in '88 (probably some sort of prototype), CheckThis out

I was just pointing out why a saber would be called a 'real saber'. Block heels, beehive knobs, wizard I's are all traits of 'real sabers'. The 'etc...; in my list is there for the things i couldn't think of off the top of my head at that very second.

Yes, the older thinner body is definetly a part of what makes a 'real saber'.

Need to set up that trem properly though. Could it be anymore 'not parallel' with the body?

This looks like a Roadstar Saber. Notice the angle of the input jack.

Kinda like this...

It's a 1987, made in january and appears to be the 1st one off the assembly line.

I bet the 3 mini toggles were replaced with the 3 or 5 way switch.

That's my guess.

I would tend to agree with you PRIME.
Personally,I have never liked the look of the 3 mini toggles.

I'm puzzeled by the red one... The recessed pickup rings are a mystery on a red S. I want it :D
