I have an AEF30 from 2004 (I believe) that my wife bought me before we were married (what was she thinking?) Serial E 04023323 it was bought new from Musician's Friend.

Anyways, the onboard preamp is AEQ SSR. I've had a ton of issues with it over the years. The solder job was poor to begin with. It clicked, it popped, it frequently dropped out during live performances.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love how the guitar sounds, I just hate to be so offput by the stupid preamp. I'm curious if anyone else has issues with this preamp and what you wound up doing? Mine just cut out again and isn't working at all. I checked the solder points on the XLR input and everything looks fine but I can't see the area that's a heap of hot glue on the 1/4" input and assume there is a broken wire in there. There are no authorized service centers close and I really don't want to pay a ton of money to fix or replace the preamp as I'm saving for a new acoustic. Also, we lost the warranty information and receipt during a move, am I still within warranty?

Any input and guidance would be greatly appreciated!

So looks like these forums aren't very active...I'll post a follow up since my direct inquiry to Ibanez is unanswered thus far. The only part I see available is 5AEQ43F as an EQ for acoustic guitars. I don't know if this will fit in my AEF 30; can you provide any guidance?

somehow I missed this!

sorry about that.

The Warranty on Electronics for all our instruments is 1 year from the date of purchase...so unfortunately you are outside of warranty...

I can advise you as to how to get replacement parts let me know if you are interested in that.

I do however need to know if you have an AEF30E or a just plain AEF30 and also the color code if available...different colors were made in different years

basically there are a number of preamps that you could need and the only way to be sure is to provide a bit more information

My first guess (since you said AEQ SSR) is the 5AEQ27F which is still available and has a list price of $124.99

this is a 2004 model,

and here is a link to our parts site http://www.ibanez.com/parts

thanks

forgot to mention, there is one issue...

The pickup for this preamp is discontinued

you would need a 5APU10F, this is the substitution

list on this is $86.00

Hi Matt, thanks for the reply. It's the purple sunburst, I'm at work and don't have guitar in front of me, but the model number has something along the lines of TVS-04 in the name.

I checked your webstore and it says you do not have any of the 5AEQ27F in stock, how can I order? Also, do I need to replace the pickup when I replace the EQ or do I only need to replace the EQ?

For that year and model the 5AEQ27F is the correct preamp.

The only reason you would need to replace the pickup too is if that is also not working...I may suggest taking it somewhere and having it tested...

Does the preamp turn on and is just not getting a read? (Pickup may be bad, output jack may be bad)

or is the preamp not turning on, but when it does it works? (Preamp is bad)

the problem is it could be any of three components depending

5AEQ27F - Preamp - not turning on, even with new battery

5APU10F - Pickup - only needed if not responding to string vibration...You can only really test this if the preamp is working. Remove the saddle, Plug the instrument in and tap the pickup lightly with something metal, you will hear a noise through the amp if both the preamp and pickup are working.

5AJK05F - Output Jack - if Preamp is coming on, but yet no sound - this is what you would check first as it has the least cost to it.

as for ordering the preamp.

All of our parts come from overseas...an item like this isn't ordered often so we stock less...

I'm showing 1 to be available after the 2/13 delivery (subject to change) and several more coming in over March.

You can order directly from us (800) 669 - 4226 with Valid Credit Card number

or from any Authorized Ibanez Dealer, should they be willing to order the part for you.

Again I do suggest taking to a shop and getting a diagnosis, It could be something simple. Shops have ways to independantly test components, This may prevent you from spending more than you need to.

Thanks
