So I got this sweet looking 1992 RG550DX about a week ago and installed an EVO in the bridge. I love the way it looks and sounds but I play it like crap. I'm at the point in my playing that I still need to look at the fretboard at times to make sure where I am. For some reason the light colored maple fretboard is throwing me way off and I screw up a lot when I play it Doh

When I pick up my RG421 or my RG470 with rosewood fretboards I play so much better that it makes it hard to go back to RG550 BooHoo

Has anyone else has ever had a problem like this?

Yeah. It never really messed me up. When I would look down (while used to playing darker color fretboards) it would throw me off a little (not to the point where I would mess up).

You get used to it. Just keep playing it.

ive had this happen and vice versa too. even letting the maple board get real dirty threw me off since my eyes go outa focus a lot while playing, the markers and dirt all blended in and when my eyes jumped in to focus for a split second i would think im at a different part of the board and the sound didnt match up, so i would question myself and then i would mess up a bit. if that made any sense, i suppose i should just say for myself, my mindset and focus has more to do with messing up. just having the idea that i will mess up because im relying on visual aid will influence more mistakes rather than just keeping it out of my head. get in the music as cliche as that sounds.
just play

i had a maple board axe for the better part of 10 years (1987 rg 550dy) and it was my main axe. i had a fewe "throw away" guitars along the time i had the 550 and the other collored fretboards never bothered me. i always wanteda maple board with no inlays. my ltd sc207 has no inlays and i love the clean look of it.
My gear.....

A guitar or two

An amp

Some chords

Some pedals

I've noticed this when I played my RG2077 which has offset dots, + longer scale. You get used to it though. I'ts like making the transition from 6 to 7 strings.

That actually makes a lot sense. I have a problem with my left eye from getting a bit of metal in it; my vision is always blurry out of that eye. Maybe the darker board with light colored inlays is just easier for my eyes to pick up on than the opposite? When looking at both types of guitars from a playing position, the strings seem to stand out more to me on the darker board also.

Eventually I will probably just be a virtuoso and it won't matter anymore Cool but it's just painfully obvious how much better I play on the darker rosewood board at this point. Especially when I'm trying to play a lot of sliding up and down the neck and skipping strings.

Thanks for all the replies, at least now I know I'm not crazy...well maybe just a little less crazy Shifty

Can you use the side dots? Then you can just glance down rather than wrenching your head around.

I'm not actually wrenching my head around it's just my depth perception is a little off because of the blurry left eye :) I think the darker board gives a better contrast so my eyes pick it up better

Due to a screwed up back and neck I'm usually playing in a recliner kicked back so I'm viewing the fretboard at about a 45 deg angle most times. I know I have a lot of issues Doh but playing the guitar is about the only fun thing I can do anymore without a shit load of pain going on BooHoo

I have been practicing a lot at trying to feel where I am on the board as opposed to having to actually see it, so hopefully eventually I'll get used to it

I'm not sure if you guys are built different and have necks that have different operating mechanics than mine or what but my neck/head is not being wrenched around when I look down at the fretboard Doh I really don't understand why you would think that it is?

On another issue...anyone know why am I getting 3 separate email notifications for every one new post?

You didn't mention that in your first post, so all we had to go by was what people usually do when they are looking at the fretboard. We had no way of knowing about your blurred eye and depth perception--that's a whole different story.
To remedy that, just do what you mentioned by practicing more to have a better feel of the fretboard. Another is to get some dark fret decals so they contrast for better clarity. Or, put dark decals over the side dots. This is probably your best bet.
While those lime green dots look really cool, I can see how they would pose a problem for blurred vision.
Here's another suggestion--trade me that 550 for my 550DX PN....LOL! Mine has black dots. You can keep your Pickguards and pickups.

Well, it happened to me at first as well.
Not so much when changing from rosewood to maple, but when changing to guitars with different inlays or no inlays except 12th fret.
The vines on my RG still throw me off sometimes, but those stickers from jockomo suck anyway. Too thick and not distinctive enough regarding fret position. Every fret looks almost the same (at first). I don't have these Probs with my JEM with vine inlays.
Nevermind, this is absolutely normal, especially in beginners. Don't worry about it, it'll come naturally by time and practice.
After a while you'll learn to orientate yourself on the side dots, no matter what crickle-crackle is on the fret board.

Just practice and don't let different colors or inlays throw you off.
Regards, Dee

I didn't mean to sound like a dick man sorry if that's how it came across. I was just joking around Eh

So what's wrong with your 550DX PN that you want mine? Think

I took all the corny stickers off except for the pink Ibanez sticker on the headstock, so the fret markers are black dots again. I didn't really think about the blurry eye problem until I posted that, and was just thinking out loud more or less trying to figure out what the deal is. I've been playing off and on for the last 25 years and I've never had issues adjusting to a guitar like this before. The only real difference is the maple board. It's kinda weird that I've always had either rosewood or ebony fretboards on all my guitars without even really thinking about it.

I have a frankenstrat Fender project with a maple fretboard that I'm going to scallop the bottom frets on too, so I'll have a couple then.

I didn't realize the green dots were decals--thought someone put new inlays in.

Yeah they looked much better in the pics too...if they weren't off-center and showing the edges of the black underneath I would probably have left them on...

On a more positive note...I put the guitar down for a few days and played my new RG470 for awhile, today I picked up the RG550 and there was no difference at all. It felt completely natural playing it and I wasn't screwing up like before???

Anyways it's all good now so I can keep her Dance
